Ben often drops in to the Avalon Hotel to chat with Alice and Trudy or to sell or trade something he has ‘come across’. He was born up Wharfedale, and remains a countryman often using dialect terms. Here are a few translations, in case you find yourself flummoxed.
Allus – always. (“I allus rides a bike”)
Go on about – keep talking about (“She keeps going on about her rich father”)
I reckon – I think (“I reckon I’ll be home tonight”)
Nobbut – nothing but, only (“It were nobbut a scratch”)
Nowt – nothing (“I’ve nowt in my pocket”)
Summat– something (“I’ve summat to tell you.”)
‘T’Owd – The old (“T’owd man”) Anytime you see t’ before a word it represents ‘the’.

Flummoxed – Bewildered
Bairn – child. (Used the same way as the Scots use it)
